June 2008 Fishing Report

Conditions

Reporting Dates:June 2008
Weather:sunny, cloudy and plenty of rain with easterly, variable winds
Air Temps:mid 80's
Water:low 80's

June brought several days of big rains and then smoothed out nicely. We had an Orvis crew of 18 novice saltwater flyfishers and every one caught their first bones, some in the 4 - 5 lb range. The group leader also caught her first tarpon, an 80 pounder.

We had a father/daughter visit over Father's Day and the young daughter (12 years old) landed some very nice jacks (see photo) as well as a 5 lb bone, and had a 60 - 70 lb tarpon on for 20 minutes before it threw the hook, and this was all on her first day!

She's coming back for the permit she missed. All this action on a fly rod and she’s only 12.

An old friend of the lodge returned from Scotland on his fifth annual trip to hunt for big tarpon and this year he landed severall; the largest was a very nice 140 lb fish. James, who fishes all over the world for tarpon, had a fabulous time and claimed, “This is the best tarpon fishing I’ve have ever found.”

The early migrating tarpon are starting to show up and should be here through early September; so make time to get down here and do some hunting.
